M.I.S.: No more parties, time for politics

There is a lot of drug-related violence in Mexico. In the five years of presidency of Felipe Calderon many thousands of people have been killed (BBC). According to former Mexican Foreign Minister Jorge G. Castañeda the war on drugs has not brought any solutions. Therefore, he pleads for the legalization of drugs (NPR). Last Sunday candidate Enrique Peña Nieto (PRI), who won the presidential elections after a recount, claimed – during the campaign – to be open to debate on legalisation even though he opposes it. But his strategy on drugs will not differ greatly from Calderon’s (Huffington Post).

Shahin Najafi reached the point of no return

The song Naghi by Persian rapper and poet Shahin Najafi has caused a lot of commotion. The satirical song is written in the form of a prayer to Ali An-Naqi, the tenth of the 12 Shia Muslim Imams, a religious figure highly respected by millions in Iran. In the song Ali An-Naqi should get Iran back on track, solving real problems like sanctions, the rising dollar to nose jobs, and prayer rugs made in China. Soon after the song’s release in May the fatwa is pronounced. Najafi is declared an apostate by religious leaders, a crime punishable by death in Iran. The site Shia-Online, which runs on the regime-controlled .ir domain, has offered a $100,000 reward for anyone who kills Najafi. (Guardian)

Madonna & Gaga on the march

If you would compare Madonna (1958) to Lady Gaga (1986) in terms of generation, quality of voice, use of social media, Lady Gaga might very well be the winner. But there are more similarities than differences. Think of their spectacular presentations, ambitions, independence, extravagance, background (they’re both from Italian families), world-wide popularity, use of trends from the camp culture and their provocations. Madonna taught the young girls in the eighties to be self assured “virgins” and for Lady Gaga everyone can be her little monster. Both their music is accessible and danceable. And in the last few weeks they were both in the news but not because of their music.

Arrests leave Eurovision a bitter taste

Last week during the Eurovision Song Contest Azerbaijan showed to the world its glamorous folklore and modernity, just as Cirttan predicted. The ultramodern Crystal Hall in Baku hosted 26 countries and an audience of 25,000 people. No less than 45,000 lights colored the flags of the different countries.

Arif Sağ cancels concert because of Dutch customs

This weekend the Turkish singer and bağlama virtuoso Arif Sağ was supposed to play at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Coming to Schiphol airport he didn’t even reach the capital. At the gate this leading figure in modern Turkish folk music (67 years old) had to wait too long due to strict admission policy for non-EU citizens. He was being interrogated for a long time. After consultations with the directors of the Turkey Now! Festival and the Turkish Ambassador he was finally allowed pass the border. But as offended as he was, Sağ decided he didn’t want to enter the Netherlands at all and flew back to Istanbul.
